She regarded him curiously. He was so obviously a fledgling, caring for an insignificant human life. As he spread his wings and lifted into the air, the angel looked down at the red-haired girl. She was beginning to stir slightly. Taking the vampire's lead, she spread her feathered wings and beat them strongly, propelling herself into the air behind him. She landed softly behind him on the roof of the building.
He asked her name, for the off-chance that they ever meet again. "Reinira," she responded simply, surnames only complicated things and gave too much away. Her gaze rested on his face. "And yours, fledgling?" she asked quietly, curiosity getting the better of her.

The girl shifted, and that was his cue to leave. From his perch on the edge of the roof, he pulled his feet under him and stood up. She didn’t need a protector anymore, from the mortal evils of the world that must seem insignificant to the winged woman who was flying up after him. He glanced at her as she gave her name and nodded lightly.
“And yours, fledgling?” she asked, meeting his eyes again.
Despite himself, he chuckled and grinned wryly at her. “Virair. But ‘fledgling’ is starting to grow on me.” He smirked and walked along the rooftop, staring up at a point of light in the sky that was a helicopter whirling noisily past. Here the sounds of traffic and nightlife were muted, pulsating underneath them like a tremor in the earth. He enjoyed the stretch of his wings as he rolled his shoulders and looked around, drawing his tongue along his lip again, the last residue of blood finally gone.
“Guess I’ll see you around,” the vampire added as he glanced over his shoulder and unfurled his wings, leaping off into the night.
